Nestled along the southern coastline of Mozambique, approximately 270 kilometers northeast of the capital Maputo, lies the serene village of Chidenguele. This hidden gem, whose name in the local Chichopi language translates to "the highest point," offers a captivating escape for travelers seeking pristine natural beauty and a laid-back atmosphere away from the busier tourist hubs.

The area is characterized by a stunning juxtaposition of the Indian Ocean's wild coastline and a series of tranquil, extensive inland freshwater lagoons, most notably the 23km-long Lake Nhambavale.

A Bounty of Natural Attractions

Chidenguele's primary allure lies in its diverse environment, providing ample opportunities for relaxation and adventure. The expansive, uncrowded beaches, fringed by high, vegetated dunes, are ideal for long, peaceful strolls and beachcombing for cowrie shells. While the ocean can be wild in parts, the presence of a natural, long-running protective coral reef creates extensive, shallow rock pools perfect for safe swimming, snorkeling, and shore fishing during low tide.

The inland lakes are a haven for nature enthusiasts. Lake Nhambavale's calm waters are perfect for kayaking, windsurfing, and paddleboarding, with equipment often available for rent from local lodges. Birdwatching is a particularly rewarding activity here, with the lagoons attracting a variety of species, including flamingos and kingfishers, making it a paradise for twitchers.

For those seeking more exhilarating experiences, deep-sea fishing charters are a popular option, tapping into the rich marine life of the Indian Ocean. Between June and October, Chidenguele becomes a prime location for witnessing the majestic Southern Right and Humpback whales as they calve in the warm waters, a truly unforgettable spectacle.

Local Charm and Culture

The sleepy village itself, visible from the main EN1 road, boasts a surprising and picturesque white cathedral with stained-glass windows, a local market (mercado), and a bakery offering the legendary Mozambican pau (bread). Stopping at the market provides an authentic glimpse into local life and an opportunity to purchase fresh, seasonal produce and vibrant handicrafts.

Chidenguele offers several beaches in the area, but there is also a very large lagoon. Naara Eco Lodge is where we will be staying tonight, and it is very near a lagoon.

There are plenty of activities available to partake in here (not included), or you can simply enjoy nature while walking the beach or bird spotting. Lunch will be served in a Local Restaurant.
