Xefina Island: Mozambique's Hidden Historical Haven
Just a short dhow boat trip from the bustling coastline of Maputo lies Xefina Island (Ilha Xefina Grande), a tranquil paradise with a dramatic and often dark past. This serene escape offers visitors pristine, secluded beaches and a quiet environment that stands in stark contrast to its history as a leper colony, a Portuguese military base, and a concentration camp for political prisoners during the colonial era.
Today, the island is primarily a destination for day-trippers seeking relaxation and a glimpse into Mozambique's heritage. The most popular activity is simply unwinding on the southern tip's sandbanks, where the shallow, calm waters are ideal for swimming and picnics. While there are no restaurants or extensive facilities, its natural, undeveloped state is part of its charm. Visitors should come prepared with their own food, water, and shade, as trees are scarce.
For the curious explorer, a walk around the island reveals fascinating ruins. Weather-beaten Portuguese fort remnants and massive World War II cannon turrets, some now swallowed by the encroaching sea, serve as a poignant reminder of the island's strategic importance in guarding the Maputo channel.
Nature enthusiasts, including biologists and geologists, appreciate the island's unique geological features, formed by deposits from the Incomati River. The area is also a great spot for birdwatching, with egrets sometimes spotted along the shore, and a variety of marine life, like jellyfish, can be observed in the water.
Xefina Island provides a unique blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue, making it an essential day trip from Maputo for those looking to experience a quieter, more reflective side of Mozambique.
Program:
Today, we will hop over to Xefina Island, only about a 15-minute, smooth-sailing boat ride from Maputo. The island does differ a bit from the other islands surrounding it. It offers a bit more history as it was once used as a prison. Today, you can expect beautiful, calm beaches and a very relaxing beach escape.
This morning, you will be picked up from your accommodation, anywhere in Maputo. The exact time is to be determined, as it will be based on the tides.
Today, the day is essentially yours to do as you please and enjoy your beach getaway! You can opt to explore the island and its lushness or simply relax and take a dip in the Indian Ocean. Don't forget your swimsuit!
We will make our way back to Maputo this afternoon and be transferred to your Lodge.
End of tour.
