Ilha de Mozambique is one of the most historically rich and culturally fascinating destinations in the country. Located off the northern coast of Mozambique, this small island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and holds a remarkable place in African and Indian Ocean history. Despite its modest size, the island tells centuries of stories through its architecture, traditions, and coastal landscapes.

Once the capital of Portuguese East Africa, Ilha de Mozambique was a vital trading post connecting Africa, Arabia, India, and Europe. This legacy is still visible today in the island’s striking blend of cultures. Stone Town, on the northern side, features grand colonial buildings, churches, forts, and palaces built from coral stone and lime. In contrast, the southern part, known as Makuti Town, is characterized by traditional reed houses and a vibrant local community, offering a glimpse into everyday island life.

One of the island’s most iconic landmarks is Fort São Sebastião, an imposing 16th-century fortress that once protected the port from foreign attacks. Nearby, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Baluarte, considered the oldest European building in the Southern Hemisphere, stands as a symbol of the island’s deep historical roots. Wandering through the narrow streets, visitors encounter museums, mosques, Hindu temples, and churches, reflecting the island’s religious and cultural diversity.

Beyond history, Ilha de Mozambique is blessed with natural beauty. Warm turquoise waters surround the island, making it ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and traditional dhow boat trips. The beaches are calm and uncrowded, perfect for relaxation after exploring historic sites.

Ilha de Mozambique offers a rare combination of history, culture, and coastal charm. Its timeless atmosphere, welcoming communities, and rich heritage make it an unforgettable destination for travelers seeking meaningful and authentic experiences.

Program:

Today, we pick you up from your lodge and take you on a tour of Ilha de Mozambique.

The island in itself is not very big, about 3 km long and between 200 and 500 meters wide. Most historical buildings are at the island's northern end. The majority of the residents live in reed houses in Makuti Town at the southern end of the island. We have a full day here to explore this tiny island on foot with its collection of historic buildings.

The Palace and Chapel of São Paulo, built in 1610 as a Jesuit College and subsequently used as the Governor's Residence, is now a museum. The Museum of Sacred Art, housed in the Church of the Misericórdia, run by the House of Mercy, displays an excellent Makonde crucifix. Other historic buildings include the Church of Santo António, the Church of the Misericórdia, and the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Baluarte. The island, now entirely urbanized, is also home to several mosques and a Hindu temple.

During our time here, we will also board the Arab-style dhow boats to explore one of the neighboring islands and spend time in the local tow,n then be transferred again to your lodge.
