Today, we will ride inland on single trails skirting African villages and vast natural freshwater lakes. The birdlife is fantastic, and there is a good chance of seeing eagles, herons, harriers, rollers, pelicans, and kingfishers. We will canter along bush paths through African farmlands, rural schools, and past the ruins of old Portuguese homesteads. The old farm roads allow for a fast pace as we continue inland towards the Govuro River.
A revitalizing picnic lunch with ice-cold refreshments awaits us on a grassy riverbank; the horses will be fed and watered before being led home, leaving us to enjoy a guided tour along the river. We will paddle along the picture-perfect Govuro River, soaking up the lush river vegetation, looking out for native fish, and listening to the magical calls of birdlife. Then you will be transferred to your lodge.
Rio Azul means “Blue River,” a true reflection of the beauty of this setting to the north of Vilanculos, Mozambique. The estuary is the perfect setting for this premier eco lodge in Mozambique.
Located on the banks of the Govuro River, Rio Azul is close to the mouth of the river and about 110km north of the town of Vilanculos, Mozambique. Rio Azul is a 1-hour 45-minute road transfer from Vilanculos International Airport.
The Govuro River runs north from Vilanculos, Mozambique, and past Inhassoro, entering the sea at Bartholomew Diaz point, at the northern end of the Bazaruto Archipelago. Rio Azul offers one of only a few access points to deep water with strong currents close to the beach, for easy casting distance at the point of the river mouth, where big game fish feed. Many species of fish can be found in the estuary for fishing with light tackle.
Rio Azul operates a catch-and-release system and offers deep-sea fishing, shore fishing, estuary fishing, saltwater fly fishing, as well as charter fishing and fly fishing trips in an unspoiled estuary environment.
