Thaba Bosiu is a sandstone plateau covering approximately 2 km² and standing 1,804 meters above sea level. It lies 24 km east of Maseru in the Maseru District.

In the early 19th century, Chief Moshoeshoe I established this plateau as a fortified refuge for the Basotho people during conflicts with the Ndebele.

The name Thaba Bosiu means “Mountain of the Night” in Sesotho. Local legend says the mountain grew taller at night and shrank during the day, confusing enemies who attempted to attack.

Thaba Bosiu served as Moshoeshoe’s headquarters during the Basotho Wars and was never conquered by enemy forces.

After visiting the historic site, travel via Roma, an important religious center and home to the National University of Lesotho, founded in 1964.

From Semonkong Lodge, collect packed lunches before visiting Maletsunyane Falls, a spectacular 204-meter single-drop waterfall, the third longest single-drop waterfall in Southern Africa.

In the afternoon, guests may also view the Bald Ibis, the national bird of Lesotho, from the lodge veranda.
